Project Finance Director
Position Overview
We are seeking an experienced and strategic Project Finance Director to oversee financial planning, budget management, compliance controls, and performance analysis for individual projects. This position is responsible for ensuring that financial operations are in compliance with company policies, donor requirements, and industry best practices while improving funding efficiency and project impact.
The Project Finance Director typically reports to the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) or Vice President of Projects and works closely with project teams, finance staff, and external stakeholders to ensure financial strategy is aligned with project goals.
Key Responsibilities
Financial Planning and Management
Lead budget development, financial forecasting, and long-range planning for all projects;
Monitor project expenditures to ensure alignment with approved budgets;
Build and maintain financial models to assess project cost-effectiveness and return on investment.
Compliance and Risk Control
Ensure that all financial activities are in compliance with donor requirements, audit standards, and relevant regulations;
Establish and oversee internal controls and risk mitigation systems related to project funding;
Coordinate internal and external audits of project finances.
Cross-Functional Collaboration
Work with project managers to ensure financial resources support project goals;
Provide financial input during project design and funding proposal phases;
Enhance financial literacy and budgeting capabilities of project teams.
Reporting and Financial Analysis
Prepare regular financial and performance reports for internal use and submission to donors;
Monitor key financial metrics and make recommendations for improvements to support data-driven decision making;
Ensure reporting to donors is accurate, timely, and transparent.
Team Leadership and Process Optimization
Lead and develop financial staff that support project operations;
Improve budgeting, costing, and funding tracking processes to increase efficiency;
Create a culture of collaboration and continuous improvement in financial practices.
Qualifications
Education
Bachelor’s degree or higher in finance, accounting, economics, or business administration;
Certified Public Accountant (CPA), Certified Management Accountant (CMA), or equivalent professional certification is preferred.
Experience
8+ years of financial management experience, including at least 3 years in leadership positions;
Experience in financial management across multiple projects or funding sources;
Core Competencies
Proficient in budgeting, cost control, financial analysis and compliance;
Proficient in operating financial systems and ERP tools (e.g. SAP, Oracle, QuickBooks);
Good communication and cross-functional collaboration skills;
Detail-oriented, strategic thinking and global perspective.
